Yesterday I saw seven Sundance shorts at the IFC Center. Before that I went to the MoMa twenty minutes before it closed. Some takeaways:

  • First, I’m still very far but I feel closer than ever to being able to pull something off like what I saw!
  • A few of the Sundance shorts could have been YouTube videos, except what seems to separate them is that they are shot very beautifully and have involved crews and equipment
  • This is my only exposure to Shorts work at Sundance but it still seems pretty commercial-ish. Like standard narrative structure and digestible themes. I’m curious to learn what festivals host the weirder stuff.
  • Not sure why I need to remind myself over and over again, but it’s so good to get out there and see work. If I’m not feeling particularly inspired or motivated to do work, then I should just go out and see other people’s work. Anything at all, even if it’s totally unrelated to what I’m working on now. That also includes just browsing and flipping through random books at the library. Being open to inspiration is an attitude and mindset. The material is all out there waiting for you to absorb and interpret it in a productive way (if that’s what you’re out to do).

I also picked up the book One Minute Plays. It’s been fun to read super, super short stories. They sometimes read like comics.
